There was plenty to organize and scrub down but very little to purge while settling into my current apartment. So when I came across a nice picture frame on the back porch left by the previous tenants, it beckoned to be scrubbed and displayed. The frame sat around for a whole year until its purpose would be revealed. During another purge elsewhere, some very well used Pantone books from the 80′s were headed for the trash. It felt wrong. I couldn’t let it happen. But what could be done with these inaccurate colors and frayed edges?

The Solution

So these two pieces of trash ended up in my possession and crossed paths. I can’t remember quite how the idea formed, but there was a leisurely 6-month schedule from concept to finish. In total, it took 20 hours to select the proper tones, cut them from the sheets and then into little squares, sequence the pattern, paste the chips down and clamp down the frame. Now I have a finished mosaic. This piece is featured above the entertainment center for guests to enjoy, design friends to geek out over, and tie into the other color patterns present in the front room. It’s colorful. It’s handmade with intentional imperfections, softening the meticulous measurements of the color matching industry. And the movement and energy created from the illusion of volume can offer some much needed inspiration to pry oneself away from the television. This was definitely a project that I enjoyed.
